    There is a third option: Sanctions don't work but they're doing it anyways to show that they are doing something.

    Seriously, what other options do they have? Escalate the war and assure mutual nuclear destruction? Do nothing and look completely impotent? No, preventing Russian generals and lawmakers from shopping in Paris and taking away the football is about the only thing they can do.

      The fourth, right option: (in a complete fantasy world) they'd recognize they stepped in it, that there's not an aggressive action that doesn't hurt absolutely everyone and do anything at all to de-escalate 😔
