In the 90s, Fallout had a persistent thematic mystique around nuclear weapons, making them supernatural and terrifying, something that the old world did that the ongoing world could only try to endure afterward.
By the time the greedy janky garbage fire known as Fallout 76 came out, that mystique corroded away to "DROP NUKES ON THE MAP TO SPAWN EPIC LOOT DROPS LOL."
Fallout 1,2 and New Vegas definitely carry this theme.
I like Fallout 3 but writing wise it's very different from those 3. You can blow up Megaton as part of gameplay with a nuke in fallout 3.
Maybe it's needlessly pedantic, but honestly my biggest gripe with 3 is that everyone lives in trash. Why? It's been 200 years, you don't need to live in trash.
I would absolutely blow up Megaton to live in tenpenny tower so that I didn't have to live in a goddamn landfill with a bunch of landfill people.
I only ever played a little bit of 1 (and haven't yet played 2), but in the couple of settlements I saw in that game the people did not live in trash. They weren't living super well, but they weren't squatting in an open sewer either.
