It's a fun and meaningful thing to do with another person you care deeply about. The long term benefits are totally all about property though. Property rights, taxes, owning property in common is made easier, etc. People just tend to treat you with more respect when they find out you are married.
I did it for the big party and also to signal a real commitment of lasting partnership with my spouse.
