I think a large part of America has an actual suicide wish on a societal scale. People hate their life but any ideology has been knocked so far down into them, that why they love the idea of a mass plague or an actual nuclear bomb. They want everything to die. IDK if thats apathy or what.
Pretty much a death drive similar to lone mass shooters that want a more dramatic version of suicide by cop and want their death to cause suffering to people around them.
Americans are also raised to be such psychopathic narcissists that they can't stand the idea of anything happening after their death. They're the main character, so if they die, the story should end for everyone at the same time.
