I never got around to playing when it first came out. I know its a cult classic and I love weird games, but is it worth playing these days?

If yes, which is better, the first or second game or should I just play both?

Edit: Yo I didn't realise just how many of you loved this game. I'mma give it a go.

It's a great, funny and very well written game.

Being 17 years old there's bound to be at least a little jank compared to modern games, but I still highly recommend it!

I haven't played 2 yet, but it'll be among the first games I buy once I have a current gen console. I've heard it's excellent and improves/builds on the first game in basically every way.

I'm a bit biased since I love Tim Schafer stuff in general, but I would absolutely recommend Psychonauts.

Having played it last year in anticipation for Psychonauts 2 it is indeed amazing how well it holds up, even better than the sequel imo.

It is one of my favorite games of all time. Play the first and then the second. Just enjoy the atmosphere, it's a fun story more than it is a great feeling platformer.

The second has significantly better gameplay (the first was clunky even when it launched). But both have brilliant stories

But honestly, I think 2 is better in almost every way except for the opening. Once you get to the base, there’s so much to explore and honestly a huge amount of storytelling in the level design

I've played the first game. It is funny and has good ideas, but it's a 3d platform game which isn't my favorite genre.

Yes, one of the most innovative games of the era.

Like 3-4 genres blended into one.

I watched my friend play it a couple years ago. It's a 3D platformer and as long as you don't mind the collectathon thing, I would say yes, it holds up pretty well. Its writing is still witty, its aesthetic is still unique, and (at least in my opinion) the platformer gameplay is pretty timeless, as long as you're in the mood for it.

I too played the first one as an adult and honestly I think it's pretty good. The gameplay is certainly a bit jank nowadays but the charm of it still comes through quite strong and it was overall very enjoyable once I was able to get used to it.

The story was fun but this was double fine's first attempt at platforming so it can be rough sometimes. Also :100-com:% it is a huge pain, no idea if you play games like that but worth mentioning. Have yet to play the 2nd one but I feel you might really like the humor of the first.
