I tried this with my ds5 and it did not work. The only thing that managed to work for a second was ds4windows and checking "hide ds4" in the settings to try and treat it like a 360 controller.
I say worked for a second because after like an hour of playing It started bugging out and just getting constant Camera rotations. I will say the add non steam game seems to have worked for some people so maybe I did it wrong....but I'm about ready to get up and buy the thing full price.
The game needs to live inside the steamapps folder like a normal Steam game despite being pirated, and then Steam’s input stuff will work fine when you add it as a non-Steam game.
Took me a couple of hours wrestling with fitgirl’s RDR2 to figure that out.
oh shit!!! I never would have thought of that in a million years! Gonna try that after work.
EDIT: Serious question...is there any risk of adding a pirated game to steam? I blocked the game in my firewall to be safe but I'm worried i'll lose access to my library or something.
EDIT EDIT: IT WORKS!!! Bless you Comrade git!!!!! God why could nobody else say this!??!!?
what a minute... DS3 did this for me! i'm just now remembering. that shit was so annoying lmao camera just constantly rotating in a circle, I thought my joysticks were just fucked but nope. do you remember if you were able to fix this, or did you just give up?
Gave up, but what u/git said below worked! Screw ds4, put the game in your steamapps folder like a normal stream game and add it as a non steam game! Controller finally works!
awesome! thank you comrade git <3 and I finally got ER and Sekiro to work using some dumb DS4 hack, if anyone ends up having controller issues DM me! ty comrades
If you buy a used Xbox one controller (which I think is even from Gamestops fuck you pricing is still half the price of elden) you can plug that directly into a PC with a micro USB cord and that should be a 100% working solution.
Then you can use the controller for more than just that game as well.
Yeah...I'm kinda regretting not getting a Xbox controller. When my PS4 pad died I had a choice and I went PS5 cause I do see a future where I own that console...but man the support on PC is frustrating.
so... aside from making the UI stupidly huge, what does big picture mode actually do/why do i need it on? i see tons of vids recommend this but im like
It like, overwrites system control to recognize controller input. I think. Idk, its definitely worth a shot. Most pirated games i add on steam dont work with a controller until I do this, in my experience - and I exclusively play with a controller

There's 0 risk. I've had pirated games in my library for at least a decade.

honestly, this might be the way to go
Sometimes you gotta use big picture mode too.

Big Picture mode enables a lot of controller stuff cause it's the UI you use of you wanna use Steam on a TV sized screen
