hmmm. ukrainian women were being paid to be surrogate mothers? Hmm. Wonder if this ties into white supremacy somehow. :thinking-about-it:

the surrogate doesn't contribute any gentic material to the baby if the surrogacy is done via IVF which would be more likely

I wouldn't. The rich ghouls looking for surrogates probably DO base the decision on that line of thinking, whether it's scientifically valid or not. Besides, it's not like they'd let some [insert whatever racist term applies] carry around their precious white fetus for 9 months!

Yeah, I am sure this is based on a rich dumb guy's understanding of epigenetics and the other ways the mother contributes to the development of the child beyond just the genetic material.

to preface this suggarcy is fine when it's between 2 consenting parties (and it's not a transaction with clear power imbalances)

But the rich assholes who think they can rent another woman's body because they don't want to ruin there own can ROT

isn't that called doing someone a favour? and yeah it kinda is fine

a slave definitionally doesn't have the right to not consent to do what their told that's what makes them a slave

yeah so does a surrogate have the right to consent to have their child taken away

under UK law by default the surrogate is considered the legal parent and surogacy agreements are not enforceable by the courts. If pressed there may be a custody hearing but again under uk law the person who gives birth is considered the legal mother so it would be an uphill battle to take the kid away given the legal status of the biological parents is "some guy who wants the kid".

basically in my country the surrogate pretty much has the right to first refusal on the kid unless the court would take away the kid anyway for welfare concerns

I mean I can imagine a person being a surrogate for a friend who cant have a child willingly. In most cases its just exploitative though

there are exceptions but that doesn't change the exploitative nature. The relationship between the workers and their boss is exploitative, this doesn't change despite there being good bosses

Criminalizing surrogacy would 100% make things worse… I can’t see why anyone that cares about people with wombs would support that.

commerical surrogacy yes surrogacy where only medical fees can legally be paid I would argue is fine

I see the parallels with the sex work argument and I think the comparisson raises an excellent point.

So when people talk about abolishing the family do they generally mean the model of 2 parents and a kid completely isolated from anyone because in my experience that doesn't actually exist and family includes friends and other relatives

whoa, that's a whole new sentence etc etc. i wrote that preface because some people do choose that route when its impossible or medically contraindicated to carry a pregnancy, and get help from like a family friend or something.

I guess the Ukrainians who have been living in bomb shelters for the past 8 years don't matter since they aren't surrogate mothers? Is that how this works?

Edit: Or is it only because it was other Ukrainians shelling them, and not the Russians?

I mean the whole reason the US played this fucking NATO game with Ukraine was so that we could get as many Ukrainians as possible killed in a nationalist insurgency against Russia. The American bourgeoisie does not give a fuck about the safety or well being of Ukrainians.
