I guess it's got to do with what's happening behind the troop and why he's doing the killing. That was my impression. He wasn't a cool guy, either, just not uncool. One of many middle-aged Americans swallowed by ennui and meaninglessness who might have (erroneously and for the wrong reasons) thought he could make a difference by doing the one thing he knows.
