I doubt it’s staged. Will Smith always had the “family friendly” image. If anything, the producers might’ve known ahead of time that they were sensitive of the joke but allowed Chris Rock to say it anyway. But I don’t think smith was acting. Especially the swearing, several broadcasters cut the awards which would be counter productive
