Yep, this has been Nintendo's MO for decades now. The Game Boy, the N64, the Gamecube, the DS, all lightweights compared to their competitors but they all (except the Gamecube) dominated the market.
The GameCube was pretty powerful compared to the PS2. Also the N64 was arguably more capable console than the PS1, the issue it had is that cartridge size limitations meant you couldn't get as many assets on the medium, and had to use more aggressive compression on media files. Also, N64 didn't dominate the market, the PS1 outsold it by over 3 to 1.

The Gamecube was actually pretty powerful, it certainly beat the PS2. Remember that RE4 had to be downgraded to run on the latter.
The graphics in games like Windwaker, Melee and Super Mario Sunshine have aged very well
