damn, a game from 2008 at 1080p? now that's what i call performance! that's gonna be a steep hill to climb to be in any way relevant in the market.

Worse than that. It's a game from 2008 that has been hyper-optimized to run on low-end machines over its 14 years of development.

It seems to be a good game to showcase it, since:

Over 117 Million players are actively playing monthly

It's a weird thing to choose for showcasing a GPU though.

My guess is that's the only thing they got good steady performance with, they probably still need to iron out some performance kinks for it to be usable for other games. The drivers are probably wonky.

Modern proprietary video card drivers are packed full of one-off hacks for individual games. This is why the nvidia driver is over 300 MB and you need to update it every time a new game is released.

Given that it's supposed to compete with the GTX1070 I think this might be more targeted for domestic use than export (like that's decently powerful for a lot of computer users, but maybe not as much for the western g*mers)

You put that chip in half a billion homes and watch the gaming industry miraculously decide that, actually, you don't need to see the characters' pores for a good gaming experience. Then watch Western g*mers absolutely lose it.

Yeah I already know this card would run all my retro-ass games fine.

western STEM-lords are great at refining graphics towards asymptotic performance metrics but they can't for the life of them come up with a compelling narrative/plot for a game (and definitely not any good dialogue/character development).

We don't need more pixels, we need better fucking writers.

We don’t need more pixels, we need better fucking writers.

I don't thing we can say that about writing without considering 2 factors first:

            1. Current game design might not lend to good writing. The limitations to the style of gameplay sets limitations on the stories that could be told. Think of your favourite movie or book which are well written, how often do they involve shooting hundreds of people or creatures?

            2. Commercialization means that you need to fill story based games with 20-50 hours of content which keep players attentions. Just like with TV series, the more space you need to fill in a shorter time, the more difficult it is to output tight writing. I don't think it's necessarily a lack of talent, as it is the requirement of having to fill in dialogue trees for thousand of NPCs, and likely have to get that finished with enough time to do voice acting and motion capture. There just isn't that much time to do any sort of story planning or punch up dialogue!

Yup- that's exactly it. Nintendo knows this too- the switch is a pretty low-powered machine but it can do exactly what it needs to do.

Yep, this has been Nintendo's MO for decades now. The Game Boy, the N64, the Gamecube, the DS, all lightweights compared to their competitors but they all (except the Gamecube) dominated the market.

The Gamecube was actually pretty powerful, it certainly beat the PS2. Remember that RE4 had to be downgraded to run on the latter.

The GameCube was pretty powerful compared to the PS2. Also the N64 was arguably more capable console than the PS1, the issue it had is that cartridge size limitations meant you couldn't get as many assets on the medium, and had to use more aggressive compression on media files. Also, N64 didn't dominate the market, the PS1 outsold it by over 3 to 1.

I mean a 1070 can run pretty much any game on medium at least at 1080p. And 1080p isn't really bad, it's a good resolution for gaming

Idk if you have one yourself, but I can run Ultra settings on most games on my UHD monitor at 60+fps. No 120fps for me or raytracing, but there's no need to upgrade for several years at least for me.

I had a 1070, and I remember I could play control at medium 1440 I think and get just about 60 fps. I ended up giving it to my girlfriend when I got the ability to get a 3070.

Either way, the 1070 is more than enough for most of the population. If that's where this Chinese gpu is, that's a very good sign for them
