An orb is used for more free flowing magic that requires your mind to wander as you channel. The spherical focus itself allows for the abstract to take form as you have more control over the weaves through hand and finger motions. Compare this with other foci such as staves, wands and swords; they have much more direction in which you channel arcane weaves.
