    One key context is that between 1949-1980s Fujian was DELIBERATELY kept underdeveloped because it was militarized as a frontline against the Guomindang on the Taiwan island. Hence very little industry or commerce etc until 1992 when ties between mainland and Taiwan somewhat normalized.

      And a lot of the early industry was due to overseas (mostly taiwanese) investments, iirc a lot of the big minnan industries like 361, li-ning, septwolves etc were funded by businessmen from across the strait.
