    I was going to say I don't know if it's worse in the novels, but then I realized I'd just kind of ignored all of it. At least Umineko gets rid of basically all that shit after the first chapter

        I mean, that wasn't the worst bit in Higurashi. At least that had a clear purpose, even if it was super creepy. The real issue was everything with Irie and how he stays a 'haha quirky pedophile' the whole game even though it's made super clear just how awful the abuse Satoko deals with is and has the super effective bit on sexual assault. And then the story ends without ever doing anything about this fucking creep

            You have a point, but Irie is still making those jokes in serious scenes. Like, he explains some of what Teppei's deal is, and then starts talking about making Satoko his bride or whatever. I agree it's not meant to be taken literally, but I think it comes off worse than any of the other similar jokes because of stuff like that.

                It might be a holdover from when Irie was meant to be the main villain of the series as well.

                I didn't know that. That actually makes some sense now that I think about it. It does get toned down in the answer arcs.
