Just like when Hitler let Allied troops be extracted from Dunkirk.

I just love how the media is uncritically repeating Nazi talking points. And this is the same soldier that the MSM has been showing giving updates on Mariupol. Note how he has the Azov patch on his chest covered. Previously he'd had it out in the open. Of course its all moot when there's another soldier right next to him proudly wearing their Azov patch on their sleeve.

Like 20,000 French and British soliders died during the evacuation from Dunkirk and another 40,000 were captured. They were relentlessly straffed by the Luftwaffe during the whole evacuation. The only reason they weren't totally wiped out was becuase the majority of Nazi forces were focused on the drive to Paris.

Also, I'm pretty sure Rundstedt is the one who came up with the idea that the Germans graciously let the British evacuate Dunkirk to cover for the fact that he kind of fucked up there by giving the famous halt order.

There is also mention in contemporary accounts that the tank crews who were pushing Dunkirk were basically into their third straight day of a methanphetmine binge and there were eyewitness accounts of drivers passing out due to sheer exhaustion. Because of this some military historians think that if the French and British had managed to regroup and fortify the beach head, it is likely they could have held it at least until Paris fell, but their command was too busy panicking. It is unclear how much it would have mattered in the long run.
