You think the Democrats just accidentally stumbled into picking the most socially reactionary option out of like 20 candidates?

The Dems picked a social reactionary in 2008, in order to appease the bigots among the mega-donor class.

Biden only got the nod in 2020 because the Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Kamala, and O'Rourke campaigns flubbed out. He was their last-ditch safety candidate.

This was the Bill Maher centrist wing of the party flexing

It's helpful to remember that the Dems, as an institution, really aren't one big party but a handful of regional parties acting as a cartel. They're like "The Five Families", with all the attendant infighting and backstabbing. Biden being forced to take Kamala as VP was the California party leaders demanding a seat at the table with the Atlantic Coast wing by proxy. But prior to the early states shaking out, it was much more of a free-for-all with some very real conflict between internal factions.

The Dems simply didn't make the mistake of the GOP in 2016 and let Bernie continue to run in the top 1/2 against a field of losers forever. Without consolidation, Biden would have gone down like Ted Cruz or John Kasich.
