COME ON IT CAN'T BE BOTH "OH THE BAD MEN IN LATAM WITH THEIR MACHISMO" AND "OH THE BAD MEN IN LATAM ARE WOKE LITTLE SNOWFLAKE" PICK A FUCKING LANE
Lathe: The democrats will run on an anti-woke platform in 2024, criticizing AOC as a tankie-wokie.
They already did, that’s what Biden and Kopmala was. You think the Democrats just accidentally stumbled into picking the most socially reactionary option out of like 20 candidates? You think they just so happened to pick a cop during the BLM riots? This was the Bill Maher centrist wing of the party flexing
You think the Democrats just accidentally stumbled into picking the most socially reactionary option out of like 20 candidates?
The Dems picked a social reactionary in 2008, in order to appease the bigots among the mega-donor class.
Biden only got the nod in 2020 because the Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Kamala, and O'Rourke campaigns flubbed out. He was their last-ditch safety candidate.
This was the Bill Maher centrist wing of the party flexing
It's helpful to remember that the Dems, as an institution, really aren't one big party but a handful of regional parties acting as a cartel. They're like "The Five Families", with all the attendant infighting and backstabbing. Biden being forced to take Kamala as VP was the California party leaders demanding a seat at the table with the Atlantic Coast wing by proxy. But prior to the early states shaking out, it was much more of a free-for-all with some very real conflict between internal factions.
The Dems simply didn't make the mistake of the GOP in 2016 and let Bernie continue to run in the top 1/2 against a field of losers forever. Without consolidation, Biden would have gone down like Ted Cruz or John Kasich.
lmao DSA goes to Venezuela once and a million angry articles are written about it calling them tankies
E: also if anyone actually wants to learn about DSA's Venezuela work check here
Better that than let Politico know that actual communists exist like the Naxalites or the CPP
You laugh but they have some seriously good takes on a protracted people's war
I don't laugh I genuinely just don't know which group you're reffering to
Are they the Philipino Maoists?
Oh sorry, Yeah Communist Party of the Philippines, their militant wing is the New People's Army
If AES countries actually start adopting LGBT rights like they've been playing at, I will happily call myself a tankie.
Cuba is doing that already, Raul's daughter and the current president are well known lgbt supporters
I agree with takes like this, to an extent. But they don't tackle employment discrimination, cultural baggage making it hard to go outside without being scared, and access to hrt. As much as I think libs are performative hypocrites, I don't fear for my safety around them.
Cuba pays for trans surgery with public healthcare, iirc. Cuba is like a model AES state at this point. I want to see the rest catch up.
In November 2017, President Nicolás Maduro expressed his personal support for same-sex marriage, and said that the Constituent Assembly would agree to discuss legalising same-sex marriage.
In September 2018, Hermann Escarrá, a member of the Constituent Assembly, said that there are currently discussions to allow same-sex marriage under the new Constitution of Venezuela, and that there is majority support in the Assembly. Discussion on the new Constitution was expected to begin at the end of 2018 or early 2019, but has been postponed since then.
As soon as the entire Guaido thing ends, i guess they will vote the new constitution.
Cuba has free trans bottom surgery, though the waiting list is very long. Had a doctor talk to me about how he is providing training for ten Cuban surgeons onit. He also did work in Laos
That's super interesting, actually. I've heard people go on about how Cuba has the best doctors.
Oh, I know, further down I said that Cuba is what other AES states should aspire to be on the intersectional issues front.
Cuba is basically what every state should aspire to be. If not for the incredible amounts of US sabotage, it would pretty much be the textbook successful communism in action that libs claim has never happened and could never happen. (and it's been pretty darn successful anyway.)
Oh for sure, but if you wax too poetic there are people who point out leftists romanticize "the little guy" and fail to acknowledge China's productive forces and poverty alleviation.
true. I also think Cuba has been in a good "rhythm" for a while, perhaps due to its smaller size. Like, it took time for Mao and Deng to essentially pave the way for Xi, who has in turn only really been able to stamp out corruption and get down to business, so to speak, the past 5 or 10 years or so.
China has made continuous progress, where I feel like Cuba moved very quickly to achieve universal literacy, medical care, food access, etc, and then has hit kind of a ceiling thanks to the US.
But I'm also probably oversimplifying. Plus, at the end of the day, it's ok for there to be more than one model for the development of socialism.
Boots Riley and Roger Waters, two recent converts to the left thanks to online extremism.
Some of their ideas have even spilled to more mainstream personalities like Maduro-defending movie director Boots Riley
:guts-rage:
lol yeah, its a tiny subset of very online communists that have gotten to and radicalized Boots Riley. There's simply no other explanation
LMAO, this is absurdly brainwormed. The author can't possibly imagine that people in latin america care about feminist or lgbt issues, and from there builds out an increasingly absurd argument that instead it is all based on appealing to Americans. (various ideology is liberally scattered throughout as well ofc). The conclusion is based in racism
i see a lot of people who talk about any sort of socially progressive stances being imported from america to other country and the natives dont want it. especially common with latinx discourse. its a weird but common talking point among the socially conservative
Which is absolutely brain dead considering Argentina and Uruguay both had gay marriage through legislative action long before Obergfell. If we were still waiting on congress there wouldn't be national marriage equality in the US.
How odd that the "oldest and most prestigious human rights organization" in Venezuela is critical of the government. You would think at some point during the decades of "authoritarian" "autocratic" leadership, they would've done something about that :thonk:
Edit: wow I really only got to the tip of the iceberg before commenting, it really just goes on and on and covers all the bases, even calls out "tankies" lmao
Jill Stein — the perennial candidate of the U.S. Green Party — played her part too in the Chavismo race strategy, attacking the opposition by tweeting: “Venezuela’s right-wing opposition backed by Trump calls Afro-Venezuelan politicians like Chávez ‘monkeys’ & is known for brutally lynching Black people in the street to ‘send a message.’” Then, she shared a picture comparing the opposition assembly and the Chavista one, purportedly to show a racial divide. Venezuelan critics promptly pointed out both the falsity of her allegations of racist lynchings and that the picture appeared edited to make the opposition appear whiter. Stein did not respond to requests for comment.
:cope:
Imagine the retirement homes in 30-40 years, everyone still ranting about the 2016 election and how Bernie Bros ruined everything.
Anyone reading this: do NOT look up venezuelan lynchings unless you're prepared to be horrified. :doomjak:
There is also a lot of murders by police in Venezuela, which libs like to imply are political murders when in fact it seems to be a failing war on drugs
The opposition can't be entrenched racists who openly encourage lynchings because actually in this photo some of em have got a bit of a tan is absolutely bang on what I've come to expect of Venezualan critics tbh.
Venezuela’s right-wing opposition backed by Trump
Imagine being more hated than trumps own handpicked stooge
The author was born in Caracas and then moved to the US where he went to Boston University. Now he spends his time writing angrily about Venezuela and its people.
His presidency is not formally recognized by the United States; the State Department considers it an illegitimate regime
Boo fucking hoo. Even the State Department ghouls who push this line admit that he wins elections because he has popular support
If I didn't know better I would have thought I was reading satire. But also, kind of cringe to be staying in a fancy hotel given the economic situation and throwing up pictures of the grand ballroom on the gram, DSA.
Why am I not being courted? :deeper-sadness:
I'd love to talk socialism with some Venezuelan comrades.
