I mean football/soccer is an actual global sport, with a set flow and structure that is appealing to most people. 2 45 minute halves, of which the ball is in play for around 30 minutes in each half. Stoppage time added to the end of each half for long stops in play. This makes it impossible to show adverts while the game is playing, unlike in American sports. A points structure (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss) that encourages teams to go for winning the game in league and group games. In knockout games, two extra time halves of 15 minutes each are added in the event of a draw, and penalty shootouts if the game is still level after extra time.

Most Americans don't like soccer, because it's a low scoring game due to the offside rule and size of the goal and pitch. However, this places a ton more value on individual goals, and low scoring, and even no goal games can be very fun to watch. A recent example is the second leg of Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City, a very entertaining 0-0 draw, which was entertaining because of what was at stake.

Clearly you've never heard of Lexus Stoppage Time. In the States they still find ways to sneak ads in—they'll also usually have an ad bar next to the score and time.

South African football was heading down that road, but actually got so broke during COVID 19 that sponsors pulled out. Stuff went from the ABSA Premiership, to just the premiership lol.

The state of football is not good right now, hope it will improve though.

It's hard for the sport to commercially survive outside Europe, since most of the good players concentrate there, unfortunately. Wish it like back in the day, where it more diverse and Brazilian club dominate

I don't think anyone has licensed stoppage time on broadcasts of MLS, yet. Just things like the "Budhauser Man of the Match" or the "Autolube Replay"

a goal is like a touchdown, a homerun and a three pointer all at once
