The NPC can only appoint people that volunteer though. And given the low number of people who ran for NPC compared to the number of seats, I'd suspect whoever showed up for the IC committee got it. That doesn't mean the IC and NPC don't share beliefs, just that they don't have to. But if the NPC's suspension of the BDS working group leaders is an indicator of their beliefs, then I find it hard to believe they have the same internationalist bent that the IC has.

The current IC leadership is very good but there was definitely others that didnt get the spots for sure. There was a huge change up basically in 2020 from the previous old 3rd campist trots cause that NPC was more favorable to the current IC's politics (but then some NPC resigned etc and things changed a bit). There will be new leadership appointments soon tho so guess well see, and theres new NPC appointments that might change dynamics too (tho NPC did reverse the decision on BDSWG at least). But still the NPC is pretty favorable to the IC now cause its the largest and most active committee in DSA nationally and does lots of good work. If they didnt approve they would just stop all the stuff IC does and not let it run the show basically on foreign affairs anymore.

Was that the IC or the NPC who were 3rd campist trots? If IC, what changes in the NPC precipitated the shakeup in the IC?

tho NPC did reverse the decision on BDSWG at least

But they haven't reinstated the suspended leaders of the BDSWG. They only un-de-chartered the BDSWG because they didn't have the authority to do so. The national convention established the BDSWG and the NPC and only it has the authority to de-charter either.

If they didnt approve they would just stop all the stuff IC does and not let it run the show basically on foreign affairs anymore

That's a legit point but then I'm very confused as to what the NPCs collective politics are. Are they actually socialist internationalists but somehow die hard electoralists?

In 2020 internal organizing cohered things more at convention and resolutions were passed to expand international work like to support Cuba solidarity and engaging with mass socialist parties in Latin America, and a bunch of left NPCs won and they reformed the IC. The committee was basically defunct before then so it was reworked and new leadership revived it and made it into what it is now. Last year IC and NPC members went on an official delegation to Venezuela and even met with Maduro, that shit woulda never flown before lol

The BDSWG shit is ridiculous and tbh it passed without even a majority of NPCs actually supporting dissolving the WG, which is why it was then reversed. A huge mess, and the leadership is basically just ignoring their suspension mostly, though some of them resigned. Its not great but i think its all being amended. People are really angry about the BDS shit which the socdems did so next convention might favor the left NPC more and pick up new spots.

NPC is kind of a mess. There are NPCs who are actual communists and marxists who support this, and there are some who are socdems who are more squishy or oppose it. IC wins out in the majority for the most part. But then 3 NPCs resigned, 2 who were very favorable to the IC, the other more of a toss up, so now new appointments are being made and hopefully they still mirror that or things might change. Definitely some real opportunists in there though.

FWIW my chapter initiated the call to expel Bowman which snowballed into the BDSWG crisis. We're now trying to organize a special convention to elect more internationalists and put more control over the NPC. If you or your chapter hasn't signed on yet you should:

It's unlikely that we'll get signatures in time to have the special convention but it'll still be valuable to know who's on our side going into the next convention.
