Try recommending cool shit instead of shitting on a game you don't like

People who come in and read this "you're having the wrong kind of fun!!!" post aren't going to try different games, they're going to think you're a gatekeeping gamer and ignore the shit out of your opinion while continuing to have fun lmao

Cool, now post about how great those are, instead of being cringe

I don't personally play DnD but you're being no different than Reddit sniffing their own farts about how superior their preferred game is and how bad popular game is

If anything, I want people to make their own games. I want them to experience it. I want them to play games that don’t even feel anything like D&D, because D&D is only one of an infinite possible games

If you legitimately want this to happen, you're not going to do this by pointing at people having a fun time and incoherently screaming about funko pops, you're going to do it by saying X game is cool and it differs from D&D with how its mechanics naturally allow X things to happen, or how you only have to read a few pages instead of multiple books, etc

It legit makes me sad that this Gamer Culture company gets the crazy majority mindshare of the hobby, even in a space that tends towards anti-capitalism

            ???

Half the posts here are from different systems, out of the four pinned posts, one of them is D&D 3.5e and the rest of them are indie RPGs far removed from D&D

It’s about it being a dead-end that I think stifles creativity and encourages a type of gaming that is like one big meme

and finally again because I want to reiterate this, if you go to /c/technology you'll see a lot of people recommending Linux, and instead of screaming at people for using Windows, they will talk about how Linux could be a good alternative for people, and go over people's doubts about switching to another OS. Because this is how you legitimately organize and get people to try new things, not by saying how the fun game they play is funko pop meme libshit capeshit buzzword or whatever

D&D 5e is genuinely my least favorite TTRPG I've played. I've played all kinds of different systems, and every single other one has been better, including other editions of D&D and games based on D&D (d20 systems, pathfinder, etc)

I play 5e because it's a system that works and everyone understands without having to sit down and explain a new ruleset for hours.

You can play any ttrpg without modules, you know. Lots of fun to be had there without your funko nonsense.

been playing fate accelerated recently and it's a good time. Fun to think of characters as being good at specific styles of interaction with the world (think it's quick, sneaky, flashy, forceful, careful, and clever) rather than Two-handed Axe or Cybermancy or whatever

FATE is great, I've moved away from it recently, but there was a point where I had like three games concurrently all using it.

I've used the Dresden Files version of FATE the most, because I like the crunchier spellcasting, but regardless, the 'story first' approach of FATE is what I love about it.

yeah, should really give more one-shot stuff a go, especially since it's so hard to keep a long running campaign going. Think it helps in my case that our DM is a lefty games writer who fuckin loves Disco Elysium (which I still gotta play at some point lol)

eh, I think there's room for both styles. It's not like Gary Gygax invented longform fiction (though, now that I think about it, calling em Campaigns is rooted in that term being used for imperial conquest lol, maybe worth finding better language at least), and personally having a frequently scheduled Friend Time is useful for my mess of a brain, though I get how that can really swing either way

Looking over this thread, I think that while I generally agree with you, I love campaigns. I love weaving a long, intricate story together with my friends, and feeling like a world is established, and changed, by player agency. Not to mention a regularly scheduled time to hang with friends.

Like, I get you, 10 candles is amazing, and theres great one-shot stuff out there. But playing a quite a few campaigns and one-shots over the years, a well-run campaigns blows one-shots out of the water, at least in my opinion. But it does require a lot of commitment, and a lot else to go right, to actually get a full satisfying campaign, so I've definitely had more good one-shots that good campaigns.

Thank you, I've quit groups because of my unyielding hatred for 5e D&D, and all my non 5e D&D games die off really quickly. Play more Blades in the Dark, Fate, Savage Worlds, Cyberpunk Red, or Call of Cthulhu, or if you're really attached to dungeon crawls, Savage Pathfinder, 13th Age, or Shadow of the Demonlord

I have not, I'll have to look into it. The summary looks like it has more focus on character background (careers, etc.), which is always a win for me

Is there a TTRPG with rules that can be explained in 2 mins, with character sheets pre made or draftable in under 10 mins?

I want a TTRPG for people whose only exposure to games is monopoly.

I heard that One Page Rules is working on an TTRPG. Their 40k and Fantasy clone are really good and *very * simple, I'm looking forward to see what they will come up with.

Love me some WoD. Funnily enough, favorite splat might just be the fanmade Genius: The Transgression, though most of the splats are quite enjoyable, even if quite a few editions need a looot of houserules to work. Definitely lean more towards the newest editions for that reason; they seem to just run the smoothest mechanically speaking.
