Not to mention that the way we perceive "moderate" kind of skews right. Like Republicans have been explicitly evil for so goddamn long that I think moderate is just the old timey "republican but not evil" before they tried to make libertarian the official republican-lite flavor.
But that's not at all what republicans do? They're absolutely mean to moderates and it works. It forces the moderates to change to appease them
