It's honestly pretty sad how much mental gymnastics people will do to convince themselves that they're "middle class" to avoid acknowledging that they're poor, because it's considered that embarrassing and shameful in America.

I was reading through thinking, "damn this is a well written effort post", then I saw it was a quote. Still a good quote though.
Middle class to most Americans means median when that's just not true anymore. It was true at one point for the majority of white people, but this is also in decline.
Middle class is PMC, households starting off with at least 150k-250k a year depending on what the cost of living is in the particular area. Middle class is by definition people own property (a primary residence and investments) but also have to work for a living.
