Had a high school friend message me, “Bro, what’s your deal?” in a group chat after I asked him several times to stop misgendering me

So I sent this and blocked him lol

Love too be pointlessly hostile and flippant to trans people venting about being misgendered

It varies from person to person, so asking is a safe bet. I didn’t even need this guy to ask. I just told him that I know he only calls men “bro” and that I’d be fine with “dude”

a nicer way to say this same thing would be

"in my circles, bro is typically used a lot and as a gender neutral term of address. it's good to know that's not universal!"

and then you can leave it at that.

I'm assuming good faith from you, but remember that people are sharing vulnerable and sensitive personal experiences here in a lot of cases, so sincerity > snark.

Dude just said he identifies as a gadfly. He’s probably an oldschool goon

yeah, I saw that after I posted. ban incoming. we support you, you are valid. and I'm sorry you had to deal with a transphobic concern troll.

I always try to give the benefit of the doubt because I'm an empathetic person, but we absolutely don't tolerate transphobia here.

This is a good point. Kinda wanted to say something similar but didn't want to look like I was playing devil's advocate. I have used bro for women and non-binary people, but if anyone doesn't want me to I won't. Same way I used to use chief a lot but some people thought it was appropriative, so I stopped.(not sure if it is, I've never heard a Native American person weigh in, but best to err on the side of caution.)

Nah, everyone in the chat was on the same page. It wasn’t some mystery I was keeping to myself
