Gameplay-wise it's real-time with pause, and very similar same to Paradox's other games (Crusader Kings 3, Europa Universalis 4, Stellaris if you want to check them out). Gameplay is about building up your country's productive forces to better enable them to conquer/colonize as much land as possible.
