    Isn't the joke here that he's childish for comparing "eat your greens hun" with "Soviet opression"? That in fact, it's pretty alright in the US if that's his complaint?

Even deeper analysis reveals that the true joke is that Calvin is the boy under censorship and oppression, destined to be exploited his whole life and have that fact obscured from him. Thus, the “stupid” Lima beans signify swallowing the ideology that makes one stupid
