Police here are a lot worse and don't even try to hide it. The left-wing here is just more militant because they're constantly defending themselves from police, military, MS-13, and right-wing agitators. Sometimes the CIA as well. You sort of have to be militant if you want to be part of a political group in Central America because of how nasty retaliations from the aforementioned groups are.
It probably also helps that the vast majority hates the police and you don't really see working class people defend them like you do in the US.
