The purple mangosteen, a coveted fruit in Thailand, was once banned in the U.S. because officials feared importing the fruit would introduce the Asian fruit fly into the U.S. The ban was lifted in 2007, but imported mangosteen must first be irradiated to rid it of the fruit flies.

I've had mangosteens, they were popular for a brief period in the early 2010s
but they obviously are gonna taste WAY worse because nothing ripe can survive a shipment across state lines, let alone one across the Pacific ocean
it's one of the few pleasures that rich people can't enjoy, which poor people (in tropical countries at least) can
unless youre rich enough to have time and money to go to SE Asia often.
