If Russia were persecuting a whistleblower like Julian Assange, the US would rightly condemn it as authoritarian abuse. But because that persecution is backed by the US, the mainstream media and American politicians are fine with it.

    I know, I know, hypocrisy and whatever. People never think twice, I really wish they would. There are people on places like globe twitter or /r/neoliberal that are mad that Anez got jail time for the Bolivian coup and insist it wasn't a coup because it didn't last more than a year while also insisting we should take Jan 6 very seriously. They'll say these things on the same day, literally no thought connecting the two. The foreign world might as well be an anime to them while domestic politics are the only real thing.

    If it was some Hong Kong guy that the UK was giving back to the main land that I've never heard of, that has written 20 books and has a photo of him with laptop with the CIA please return stickers on them, it would be the biggest China bad story and Reddit nerds would be talking about it a decade after it happened.
