Back Dresses is a noise pop group consisting of Ada Rook and Devi McCallion. They met online in 2017 and immediately began collaborating together. Their sound has ranged from light post-punk to glitchy metal, with their most recent album featuring some of their heaviest songs yet.
After quietly releasing a cover of Paper Planes in late 2017, the group began gaining notoriety 5 months later with their debut album Wasteisolation. It was written entirely online, sending files back and forth throughout all night writing and recording sessions over a three month period. The themes of queerness, isolation, existance, and anger expressed through a very raw lens went onto become the signature tone of a Black Dresses album. The viral success of this album pushed the members to move closer together to make future collaborations easier.
The duo released two albums in 2018 Thank you and Love and Affection for Stupid Little Bitches. Both albums leaned less into metal, though still remained as experimental as their debut – shifting through many electronic genres. While the group's popularity continued to grow online, the attention became more intrusive and led to harassment of the members. The situation hit a breaking point just a month after their 2020 album Peaceful as Hell came out. This led to the duo releasing a statement online saying that due to consistent harassment they would be disbanding and pulled all of their music from streaming services.
After taking a year to reflect and collect themselves, they decided to continue releasing music together. In 2021 they released their fifth album Forever in Your Heart and received their best response yet by music critics. The darker themes of their previous albums remained the same, but the music also took a heavier turn overall to match the vocal and lyrical intensity. This year they released their sixth and shortest album titled Forget Your Own Face. [Which features some of my favorite songs by the group]
On a personal note - I appreciate Black Dresses for writing about queerness in a way that very critically speaks about existing in a cishet dominant society. While I can’t personally relate to every aspect that affects the duo, I’m glad there are popular artists who are loud about not accepting the status quo and meaningless half steps queer people are asked to be thankful for.
Stream Forget Your Own Face - it’s only 20 minutes and pride month, so do it :top-use-words:
