Get a gun and a cleaning kit. Learn to maintain it. If your friend has a different kind of gun (example: you have a handgun, they have a rifle) meet up at a range and try each other's guns out to build familiarity with a variety of firearms. Offer to help clean their gun so you can learn more about how different guns work. Learn different shooting stances. Learning how to shoot a pistol while prone is on my personal list. Stay safe. If you don't feel safe arming yourself but know a person who does have a firearm consider asking them politely to go to the range together and throwing a few rounds downrange. Get used to the sound. Get used to the recoil and the feel of a gun. If you don't want anything to do with guns consider getting a gunshot wound kit and learning how to use it, especially if you're going to protests. It's commonly called a IFAK kit.
