Most nosebleeds come from higher (or further back ) in your nose. You need to either compress the bleeding with pressure on the area, like by pressing together just below your nasal bone.
This also allows you nose to fill up with clots and stop it that way, if it's further back than you can put pressure on with your fingers.
Other options we have on the ambulance are soaking gauze with lignocaine and adrenaline and shoving it up there. The adrenaline causes vasoconstriction and stops the bleeding.
Or we can use a mucosa atomizing device (MAD) and spray adrenaline all up in there for the same purpose.
If none of that works we have a special nasal tampon that gets shoved in there and has to stay there for like 12 hours. This also stops the bleeding through pressure and basically encourages clotting.
The ultimate stop is burning the bleeding vessel closed. This is usually done in hospitals and can be done with a hot wire thing or with silver nitrate I believe.
