There are more moderate positions on abortion, even within the Catholic church leadership. Most of the Scholastics were not opposed to abortion, or opposed it on weaker ethical grounds than the killing of a human with a soul. For most of the Church's existence Abortion was not an excommunicable offence and the stance was pretty much the same as that of Islam.
This hardline stance is (what a surprise) a result of Pius IX and his fucking butthurt First Vatican Council.
But yeah, US conservatives also managed to tie it to the Catholic theological basis for opposing infanticide in the mid 20th century and the rot has spread.
Yeah I've got a complicated relationship with Catholicism - I grew up in the church and then my family had this weird evangelical awakening while I was away at school. Some of my pessimism toward the church is probably projection.
