I don't know how much louder people can scream without just taking the next inevitable steps of Minecraft SMP.
it's a "fringe" issue because no one has taken steps in Minecraft. if someone had burned down the Supreme Court, in Minecraft of course, or uhh gone full creeper on a justice, they'd have started proposing bipartisan legislation that would have gone nowhere and died in committee. if it had spawned a strike wave, the government's inability to act would have ensured its demise.
