I still think Trump wins the nomination if only because nominating someone else would be like admitting Trump was a bad president

He could call him out on being a grifter, point out how Trump was a dem his entire life, supported both Clintons, play the "Republicans have the dumbest voters" sound byte. A competent fascist could turn the hogs on Trump at any time.

That quote was made up. I don't think the former dem angle is inherently effective. If anything,I think it actually helps him because they can point to that whenever someone argues that he's too extreme or associate him with white nationalism.

Lying has had no consequences for the last few years.

People have been calling out Trump for being a grifter his entire career. The base is still rabidly pro-Trump, the republican establishment will let him run if he wants to. There is nothing from the past that hasn’t been covered that will turn them against Trump, they’ve heard it all and don’t care.

I don't think it matters what DeSantis does as much as what capital wants. The Republicans could absolutely rig their primary if they please. What are the maga folk gonna do? January 6 part 2? Strike? They currently believe Biden is an illegitimate president and there have been exactly zero assassination attempts.

Trump eats career politicians for breakfast in primaries, if he wants it it’s his.

Anybody can be ratfucked in a primary if the party establishment decides so, it should be clear by now that these are only democratic processes as long as it doesn't upset the ghouls. The question isn't if Trump can still count on his mass appeal (he ofc absolutely can), the question is if the donor class wants to let him near power again in spite of having proven how erratic he is. This isn't 2016 anymore, the world has gone through so much shit in the last 6 years, his instability definitely makes him a lot less palatable to capital than back during his first run.

Is it really any secret the bourgeoisie were unhappy with Trump? He was erratic and unpredictable, plus he riled up the population far more than the ruling class is comfortable with. The summer of 2020 had nationwide riots. The January 6 thing seems silly to us, but it genuinely freaked out establishment politicians and their donation networks. I think what freaked them out the most though were waves of unionization efforts, like that time TSA employees threatened to strike during the government shutdowns.

The parties are ultimately servants of capital and part of that involves maintaining a blanket of illusions and docility on the population. Trump ultimately failed to do that, so they'd rather have someone more competent.

It's a possibility and I'm sure the rich would prefer DeSantis over Trump, but they also would've preferred Kasich or Jeb Bush in 2016

It would be tough to convince the nation's uncles to vote for someone who doesn't make the libs as mad as Trump does, even though Trump fucked up things (covid was an unprecedented failure until Biden came in and did the exact same thing), the job is 80% culture war bullshit, the white house is a daycare center nowadays

The capital establishment didn’t want him to begin with for basically all the same reasons. DeSantis will only succeed with Trump’s cooperation, the only thing he’s truly good at is humiliating his opponents in the media because he is unfettered by the decorum of a professional politician. As living conditions continue to Brandonize, a lot of those suburban swing voters are going to soften on their distaste for Trump as they remember actually being better off during his presidency.
