I dunno, my cousin lives there and I've visited a few times. It's definitely a reactionary country on the whole but it still felt safer. Like I saw a gay couple walking down the street hand-in-hand in a midsize town in broad daylight, which is not something I could ever think of doing in the bumfuck US exurb I live in.
Also Japan is an incredibly conformist society. Think 1950s america.
I have friends who couldn’t even live together there before being married or else they would be shunned/looked down on by people. It’s a fucked up place.
