That's old diesels that had no emissions controls. And that's just the engine. The rest of the truck has all been replaced.
Modern diesels do not last that long due to the emissions needed to control the pollution is a heavy tax on the motor and it's life.
The egr is what causes the issues. They get clogged up leading to turbo failure.
Also keep in mind that gas vehicles started emissions back in the 70s and it was a mess also. Ruined reliability and power. Diesels didn't get emissions till 2007. So the reliability is still a factor.

Egr delete, which is bypassing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems required in all diesel vehicles so they don't pollute nearly as much.
The delete increases mpg and power, at the cost of everyone's lungs.
