Michael Brand from the "moderate" conservative CDU party, who will likely be part of the delegation:
The Chinese leadership has to watch out that it doesn't become a dragon spewing empty threats on the international stage. A bit more Asiatic discipline would be appropriate.
Visits from German MPs to Taiwan have happened in the past without causing diplomatic incidents, but Jhy-Wey-Shieh, the Taiwanese represenative in Germany (meaning, the de-facto ambassador) has asked for the parliament's president Bärbel Bas (SPD) to head the delegation:
The inhibitions to travel to Taiwan must fall.
Bärbel Bas' office was reasonable enough to decline that invitation, stating that there is an agreement not to do visits of "sovereignty-relevant" politicians to Taiwan. This includes the heads of the executive, legislative and judicative branches of government, the chancellor, the federal president and the secretaries of defense and foreign relations.
Unfortunately, foreign relations secretary Annalena Barbock has already singaled her support of Pelosi's visit in recent days and is a hardcore lib who has studied poli sci at the london school of economics (read: she is an idealist fool who wholeheartedly believes in the democratic regime change ideology of American neocons), so we'll have to see how this develops.
