    Limestone makes caves like this. Water is slightly acidic so buried limestone washes away.

        An incredible amount of forest in the US is new-growth forest. A ton of times when you're walking through a wooded area even remotely close to civilization, there's a high chance it used to be a farm or something.

        I wonder if this pipe was for a deep well for an old farmhouse or business.
