I've been out a work for a while now, and every app I've put in has gone nowhere. I have a bit of savings, but I really do need a source of income. Is proofreading on Fiverr a good gig? Is there anything I should know before I start?

Yes for something on the portfolio but once you feel established advertise yourself somewhere, :reddit-logo: 's forhire board and similar ones are surprisingly decent for gigs, or put a good CV together and apply directly for editorial jobs.

I'm a freelance writer. It's solid income when things are going well and an absolute nightmare when it isn't because all you want is a good gig again. Better than being fully unemployed though.

:this: is the answer here. I work with a bunch of people (designers, illustrators, writers) who are/started freelance. Use it if you have to for a few bits of work and then look elsewhere, as depending where you are in the world the money is dreadful on Fiverr and you'll have a hard time increasing your rate to something sustainable if you're still on there or clients know you were.

If you can you'd be better off finding your first clients elsewhere by throwing together a cheap website and seeing if you can get a gig or two from friends or local businesses, perhaps even for free (once or twice), to use as previous work.

I'll confirm local businesses are an excellent way to start out if you're a schmoozer about town. I was, worked well at the time.

It's a great way to justify all the time you spend in the bars too lmao

It will be severely exploited labor where all your surplus value and then some is sucked away

      So, like every other job.
