Just something I came across while reading an obscure history newsletter. The author argues that his grandfather, whom he never met for reasons disclosed in the article, must have been tortured into confessing involvement in counter-revolutionary activities in the 1930s.

must have been tortured into confessing involvement in counter-revolutionary activities in the 1930s.

Literally what would be the point of locking up a loyal citizen and then torturing them into pretending to be a country revolutionary, just a giant waste of time and resources lmao

Cause nkvd decided bigger numbers more better, with stretch I can believe 1/10th was involved in whatever activities. There were some letters from yezhov saying as much (something like sir we suspect there are 2000 man involved - triple it)

Y'all need to read up on the Great Terror. It was really bad and there aren't really any mitigating circumstances.

This isn't exactly a stretch. The Great Terror was a complete own goal where about 750,000 people were murdered on spurious charges in what amounted to a very large scale witch hunt.

yeah, this kind of hysteria starts with eliminating the workers but eventually it'll be the spooks hunting the spooks... while still hunting the workers...
