I met a Spaniard that claimed it originated as a cheap way for teens to drink publicly without being obvious by pouring cheap red wine into the partly emptied coke bottle.
It's pretty effective if you want to catch that extra buzz with the added sugar and caffeine.
All I know is I woke up like four days ago with a huge box of wine in my backpack. No idea why.
And as a lover of alcohol and a hater of wine I had to figure out how to drink that shit lol

i think soft drinks were originally formulated to be mixers, but some marketing wizard was like, "just play it straight and kids can drink it!"
anyway, i also enjoyed sangria (the red wine + OJ kind), but the sugar could be heinous later.
towards the end of my drinking, i would downstep cheap reds with water as my night went on, in an effort to widen the target window and reach the zenith of booze buzz without every really being too drunk (zero spins) to glide gently into a bed without being very dehydrated the next day.
don't let anyone tell you that you can't mix wine with whatever. those people are brutes.

I did this until it started to make my stomach feel like it was full of battery acid. I'm old but it's the most acidic mixed drink you can make. It is easy to get drunk though

That's really bad for you.
Not just the megadoses of sugar, which are bad enough on their own, but the stimulants keep you up long past the point at which you should have passed out.
If you're feeling logy then have one at the beginning of the evening but then switch to something more sane. Tonic or soda water and lime is a good choice.
Haha, I did a boot of dumbass recipe version. Of that once. They sell Red Bull powder. Boot of vodka+Gatorade (for flavor not weak shit like hydration)+energy drink powder.
