Tow companies are usually a huge fucking racket that will charge you hundreds of dollars after stealing your car at the behest of either the cops or some petty bourg that felt inconvenienced by where you parked it. Of course they have their valid uses as well, and towing away a cop car is fucking hilarious.
My city has hundreds of stories of the tow companies just stealing cars that were legally parked outside businesses and holding them ransom, and the cops don’t do anything because they’re in on it.
In a reasonable world illegally towing a car would get you arrested for stealing a fucking car, which is what you did
At least in a few states (California is one that I know) if they tow illegally, you can get them to pay you three times what they wanted to charge you to get your car back. There's certain things they need to have (like if they're towing you from a business lot, you need to have been there for at least an hour, a manager needs to sign the paper etc etc) and if they're missing any of the documentation or proof you can make them pay you instead of vice versa and get your car back. But I'm sure it's still a big hassle jumping through the hoops to actually do so, pretty sure you have to like file a claim at small claims court or something.
Here I only know one person who’s ever managed to even just not pay them, and it’s because she brought her cop dad to confront them. The tow companies are effectively a gang in my city.
if you own capital/means of production (the tow truck) it is legal to steal from people, capitalists are legally allowed to steal things as long as they use bourgeoisie methods.
I once was living somewhere where it was 100% impossible to live without a car, so much so you could drive for blocks without finding a street spot, and I didn't have an assigned space. One night I was all out of options and had to park in the parking lot of a massive complex, like three different grocery stores, retail shops, restraunts, fast food places, all that American suburbia shit. The parking lot was huge, could fit thousands of cars probably, and by this time it was nearly empty. The next morning my car was gone, it cost over $300 USD to get back, and awhile later I noticed a grinding sound from my front suspension, and it had been a few days already so I knew there was no way the tow company would take responsibility. That space costed me over a grand for one night.

Sounds like a job for a bigger tow truck, to tow their trucks
