it feels so much like a very long form hack and slash "Hellraiser" story.

(Thanks Internet Archive for having 40 volumes of this slop available for free)

Be warned that its probably one of the primary examples of grimdark. So trigger warnings for alot things especially sexual assault.

If your more worried about the typical quality of normal anime when it comes to sa rather then it existing you should be fine. Its mostly handled well when it comes to the main characters. The manga itself is still notoriously grim even past that.

At the very least, most of the SA is kinda telegraphed well enough in advance that you can usually quickly skip the five or so pages and move on (usually).

Yep, I was bored one night at work and decided to give it a shot. First page has

            CW: probably SA?

Guts fucking some sort of monster

            and I tapped out.

Yeah, its not what the whole story is about but it definitely coulda started differently.

The Dark Knight job story arc in FFXIV is pretty much Berserk with the gore and SA/SV edited out.

Dude, named Guts, has a pretty rough life from birth onward.

Guts becomes little more than a mercenary killing machine using a huge sword.

Guts falls in with a band of mercs lead by a dude, Griffith, who has a grand dream. The leader's charm and dream attract lots of disaffected people as he wins battle after battle getting ever closer to achieving his dream. Griffith is portrayed as kinda having a thing for Guts, less sexual and more "dude's rock" vibes.

Guts tries to go out and find himself outside of Griffith's dream, which is the instigating factor in turning the darkness of this story up to 11. A slow rolling hell on earth begins after Griffith succeeds in his dream.

The rest of the story, so far (I'm just now starting on volume 18) is a grimdark gruesome "monster of the week" where we watch Guts murder his way through baby demons until getting to the big demon of the volume and murdering them. Bits of backstory are dropped throughout.
