if pokemon came out today they would hate it for being too political because at the beginning professor oak asks you if you are a girl or boy

Originally in gen 1 you were locked into being a dude. It was only until crystal that you could play as a girl.

For anyone in their 30s, does anyone remember if people were angry that Crystal allowed you the choice between a boy and a girl?

I'm too young to remember any press about Crystal, but I do remember my friend being excited to be able to play as a girl. It was unclear to me at the time why it was such a big deal, but it made more sense when she came out as trans about a decade later

MFW it was Gamergate that changed gaming culture to be more friendly to one political wing. I kid you not I watched some of Anita Sarkeesian's videos not too long ago, and she never really said gaming was bad. If no developer was going to listen, then why would she waste her time?

I don't think people were politicized about it when Crystal came out, but I do remember it being known that there was supposed to be a female character all the way back in Red/Green and they just didn't implement her.

Ever since Sun & Moon, the game just gives you a bunch of images to pick from with different genders and skin colors. I'm not even sure they ask if you're a girl or boy anymore, it's like "hey which one was your passport photo" or some shit
