if pokemon came out today they would hate it for being too political because at the beginning professor oak asks you if you are a girl or boy

Originally in gen 1 you were locked into being a dude. It was only until crystal that you could play as a girl.

For anyone in their 30s, does anyone remember if people were angry that Crystal allowed you the choice between a boy and a girl?

I'm too young to remember any press about Crystal, but I do remember my friend being excited to be able to play as a girl. It was unclear to me at the time why it was such a big deal, but it made more sense when she came out as trans about a decade later

MFW it was Gamergate that changed gaming culture to be more friendly to one political wing. I kid you not I watched some of Anita Sarkeesian's videos not too long ago, and she never really said gaming was bad. If no developer was going to listen, then why would she waste her time?

I don't think people were politicized about it when Crystal came out, but I do remember it being known that there was supposed to be a female character all the way back in Red/Green and they just didn't implement her.

Ever since Sun & Moon, the game just gives you a bunch of images to pick from with different genders and skin colors. I'm not even sure they ask if you're a girl or boy anymore, it's like "hey which one was your passport photo" or some shit

"Style 1" and "style 2" are just literal translations of how you say "female" and "male" in Japanese

The easy solution to this that would make chuds look even more insane would just be to assign the character models default names that are aggressively gender neutral. Just give everyone nonbinary names with little to no cultural gender assignment.

Rowan, Slate, Fern, Quinn, Creek, Wren, Teak, Scout, Aster, Riley, Vesper

I have never heard of a fire emblem before, no idea what that is. Sounds like an award for firefighters, or maybe a bad excuse to add too many anime sword fighters to a fighting game.

I agree with them though. Every company that does an anime gets the wall

They'll release another FF title that's half finished gibberish and re-up for a zillion dollars, no problem.

They're angry that the femme character only has skimpy clothing options right?

    Square Enix.

Hasn't Final Fantasy 7 made it clear enough for westoids? Square Enix is NOT for them.

Go back to Madden and COD, because God forbid a game dev team doesn't want to be the vidya equivalent of McDonalds and push out inoffensive, flavorless mush.

      :jesse-wtf:

In North America, it was the most anticipated game at the time,[184] with its popularity inspiring thousands of retailers to break street dates in September to meet public demand for the game.[185][92] In the game's debut weekend in North America, more than 330,000 copies were sold and $16.5 million grossed ($28 million adjusted for inflation), which was higher than any video game (surpassing Star Fox 64 at 300,000 sales) and most Hollywood blockbuster movies to date.[92][186][176] Final Fantasy VII reportedly went on to sell 1.5 million copies in North America during its first week of release.[46] It helped the PlayStation break a long spell of Nintendo 64 dominance in North America;[187] the game topped the monthly sales chart[188] and entered the top three on the video game rental chart, the first time a PlayStation title entered the top five after months of Nintendo 64 games dominating the rental charts

Sometimes this site is just baffling

I think what InvaderZinn meant was that if you hate "politics" in games, why bother playing a rpg from a company that releases games full of "politics" since the 80's/90's

          Yeah, basically my point.

In hindsight, I probably should have said "CHUD" instead of "westoid", and tbh I have a bad habit of using the two interchangeably.
