How about something different for today's Sunday Slop? Well, have I got the double feature for you: silent horror! And not just any silent horror, but two of the most famous and well-regarded examples. See below for CWs and doesthedogdie.com links.

First up is Haxan (1922), a quasi-documentary of sorts on medieval witchcraft. This movie is from 1922 so it's pretty tame by modern horror standards, but does contain some lurid scenes -- see CWs below. It is also pretty cartoonish to the point that some sources characterize it as a horror-comedy. Here is Letterboxd's description:

"Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious– instead it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous."

Second up is Phantom of the Opera (1925), the most famous role of the most famous silent-horror star, Lon Chaney! Again, this is a really old movie, so it's not too intense, but it is basically about a demonic sex pest, so yeah, keep in mind. Here's the Letterboxd synopsis:

"A grotesquely disfigured composer known as 'The Phantom' haunts Paris’ opera house, where he’s secretly grooming Christine Daae to be an opera diva. Luring her to his remote underground lair, The Phantom declares his love. But Christine loves Raoul de Chagny and plans to elope with him. When The Phantom learns this, he abducts Christine."

• Brief nudity. No sex is shown but it is implied.
• There's a scene of a woman kissing the devil's butt. A title card reads as follows: "All the witches had to show the devil their respect by kissing his behind."
• There's a scene of a dead baby being eaten, with a really fake-looking prop.
• Implied rape: there are two scenes showing a demon hypnotizing a woman and luring her out of her bed to seduce her into witchcraft.
• There is also a scene of a demonic hand feeling a sleeping woman's back.
• There's a depiction of a woman strapped to a torture device, though the torture is not actually shown.
• There's a scene showing a woman giving birth to a demon (it like crawls out from under the blankets.)
• Hate speech against witches in depicting them in leagues with Satan. It is anti-witch propaganda. However, it also has a feminist message in presenting witch hunts as sexist and classist.
• Depictions of occult rituals.
• Implied animal deaths.
• Farting.
• Vomiting.
