Neat, I like this kind of stuff. I have a Sansa Clip+ (Rockbox) and it's really all I need in a media player, but I've considered picking up old iPods and stuff and modify them. The purple is cool

its great stuff. I wish I still had my old mp3/flac player (it was also a sansa but not the clip)

the chief advantage of apple products here though is the uniformity, there are 10 different models of mp3 player out there for every 100 used ipods that are exactly the same, so aftermarket parts are still a thing even 15+ years later. a sandisk or whatever is more of a crapshoot. but at least they're probably cheap to mess around with if you can find one for spare parts

There's also a lot of budget Chinese audio players that playback a bunch of formats. Some are crapshoots, but there's also stuff from Fiio, Hiby, and few other big brands that are a bit more polished.

my impression was that the decent ones were all running android crap though. I dont just want a smartphone without the modem lol

Hmm, yeah I kinda forgot that most were moving toward Android. There might still be a few budget models that are using Linux.

You can de-google and rehabilitate the battery life on some like the sony a105.
