FOOD AND GAS PRICES ARE OFF THE ROOF. WELCOME TO BIDEN AMERICA

I THINK INSURANCE IS MANAGED BY SATAN AND MY MEDICAL BILLS WILL BANKRUPT ME SOON

but I don’t want to change anything about this. I think it’s the most superior system and nothing else should be even remotely reformed.

Clown ass country rightfully complains about how everything is expensive and miserable and exploitative but demands that nothing gets changed otherwise companies will retaliate by rising prices artificially anyway

Usually the deeply unserious people saying this kind of thing mean that the US's outrageously outsized military funding "allows" its european NATO allies to spend on healthcare instead of bombs

Kinda true, but also things like the marshal plan after ww2 and Europe’s proximity to the Soviet Union.

Where in the world besides the apartheid entity does the US subsidize healthcare lmao

I usually hear people claim that US military spending in the EU, Japan etc. allows those countries to focus their economy on healthcare and education, since the US is eating their military costs and "protecting" them.

This is the first I've heard a claim that the US directly subsidizes other countries' healthcare.

This is the first I've heard a claim that the US directly subsidizes other countries' healthcare.

The argument they're probably referring to is the idea that the US spends money to make the drugs and innovate while other countries just make them. Because US companies eat the cost of innovation, the prices in the US are higher.

Of course its all bullshit because a significant portion of new drugs are funded by the US government and then privatized for no real reason.

Conclusions. Higher prescription drug spending in the United States does not disproportionately privilege domestic innovation, and many countries with drug price regulation were significant contributors to pharmaceutical innovation.

Older study but I don’t see why it wouldn’t hold up today. Long story short, these claims are simply not true and yeah just a way for Americans to cope with being fucked over by their pharmaceutical industry.

Just wanted to say that the absolutely bullshit raise I got these year was immediately consumed and surpassed by increases in my rent, health insurance, and renter's insurance (which inexplicably doubled). My auto insurance went down $2/mo but it's still nearly triple what it was years ago.

It's poor circular debate brain worms, if already the US subsidizes other countries healthcare (the entire world to some idiots) than surely it can do that for it's own people extremely well or is the US just that broke because it spends stuff on the military and internal bullshit but not for it's own citizens? Also can be seen a a low key nationalistic dog whistle by idiot chuds that don't really care about healthcare but just want people in other countries to suffer.

It’s a common chud line, they claim that because of Americas ridiculous and absurd military budget everyone else is “made safe” and can spend the money that would otherwise go to “defense” on social spending.

Another common refrain is trading costs would be higher without the naval spending because “we prevent piracy” lmao. We can’t even stop attacks on specific ships in a small area, I’ve heard less of that second line since the blockade started at least.

With healthcare, it is usually more along the lines that our drug and healthcare prices are high because they need to be high to recoup research and development costs. The other countries get drugs cheaper because their regulations and price controls means that they aren't paying R&D costs and are just having prices high enough above per unit production costs to still be worth selling the drugs in that country versus not. So the US prices get even higher since only in the US markets could they sell the drugs for enough money to offset these high upfront costs of actually developing the drugs or techniques.

It is bullshit, and even if it were true, there would be better, more sane ways of doing the development than for profit. But that is usually the argument about how the US drastically outspends more per capita than any other nation on healthcare.

All these pharma companies spend way more on advertising than they do on R&D

That’s a parallel argument they also use, generally speaking they believe both and pull out whichever they feel is more relevant to dunk being made on them.

Kinda, they don’t really go into NATO except to point out America pays for damn near all of it. They usually tie this into complaints about “Europe being free riders on our defense programs”. They would never respect a European military enough o consider it a shield.

Complete side note, but there’s no reason to @ me u less you are intentionally giving a copy of your response to my inbox because all it does create a second notification. I got the first one just fine

Is that how it works on your instance that you have to @ the person you reply to?

Not trying to be aggro, just confused as to the reason and trying to figure it out

I just have to remember to manually delete it when I'm replying to one of the few Lemmy federation posts that makes its way into my Pleroma/FireFish/Mastodon/Misskey timeline or list. It adds those by default.
Seems like the best way to do this is on Mastodon surprisingly, since it has this straggler feature of omitting a list's contents from your main timelines. FireFish has the snappy translation and loads of other stuff, though.
This is no replacement for an actual account on whatever Lemmy/Mbin instance if you want to see everything and respond to the full discussion in the community or megathreads, but it's perfectly fine for submitting random posts I like how fluid just @mentioning a community is even if it's text post only that's an easy limitation to work around. Simply add effort, or shitpost
