China is lagging 10 years behind the times while Europe is at the bleeding edge of internet crypto-fascism.

I'm told that on the other side of the great firewall the Chinese have bleeding edge meme technology, but armaments export controls prevent them from unleashing them on the wider internet.

"The firewall isn't here to protect me from you. It's here to protect you from me!"

I used to think the Great Firewall was exclusively to prevent Chinese people from learning how cool the rest of the world was. And I'm still iffy about censorship in general. But looking at the absolutely bizarre shit that people in the West believe about Covid, NATO, Capitalism, and all sorts of other shit? I have doubts now.

I know what you mean. This pandemic has pushed me from "maybe the libs do have a point about free speech" to "banning certain ideas is cool and good actually."

I used to think the Great Firewall was exclusively to prevent Chinese people from learning how cool the rest of the world was.

I find it interesting that many westerners think this, but also think that there's too many Chinese tourists and students everywhere. Like bruh, Chinese people can develop an opinion of a place first hand.

It's clearer than ever that completely unregulated speech works about as well as completely unregulated markets.

The one place to make an exception is probably academia, where you have a qualification barrier and a population that at least has the tools to keep from being mislead. You'd of course have to pair this with completely free education for all and heavy, frequent reminders of past academic arrogance to avoid forming a bazinga cadre.

If it weren't for the Great Firewall, their early internet would have been flooded with NATO spam bots.

Tbh, the firewall is more a way to develop Indigenous Tech parallel to the one from the West, since the user poll is enormous, you can have a vast pool of data to optimize your product. It's not a coincidence that AI technology in China is catching up to the West

I drew my conclusion from a book i read on the tech sector in China and also an episode of silk and steel where the host interviewed a person in tech about the difference of tech development in China vs India

The jist of it is that India doesn’t have a look of control over its user data nor any concrete indigenous tech development the reason is because the government makes more money in the short term selling datas to western tech company and also it doesn’t try to encourage indian start up consequence being that they get bought out by bigger tech companies and kill off.

What you have in India is a pool of super talented tech people who are contractor for as IT tech for western cubicle rats when their excel sheet start to fuck up
