I'm genuinely distressed by the prospect of this. Signal was FINALLY the breakthrough in mass adoption of encrypted messaging that we needed in the US, and it's all going to go away because people can't be bothered to have more than one messaging app. And I don't mean that sarcastically, it's a completely reasonable thing to want.

Tbh I gave up and installed like 5 different messaging apps and my life hasn't gotten that much worse. But maybe I'm almost not really messaging that many people

The reasoning makes sense, but that's going to take a while to get used to lol. I've used Signal as my SMS app for years at this point. Does anyone have recommendations for a good messaging app for android?

Edit: I think I used Textra before Signal, is that still good?

I use Textra+ signal now. Used Textra since I've had a phone that can download apps, but I'm honestly unsure of any sort of merits or reasons to use it besides having used it for this long

I'm kind of torn between Textra for the features or the Google messages app for the RCS support. In either case, gotta wait for the export option before I switch

God damn it, there's no easy way to push back against this either cause the foundation's a fucking black hole when it comes to outside communication for us plots, and it's "open source"-ness is basically fake. Too many normal people started using it so it has to die and become just another shit texting app that should just be matrix. R.I.P.

Whatsapp is also like this, right? Closed ecosystem of encrypted chat (but FB gets to snoop on that one, of course).

Yes, but Whatsapp also has this wild monopoly shit going in much of the global south where things conveniently got set up such that people get charged for SMS and could avoid the fees by using Whatsapp instead. From my understanding, it is practically impossible to live in Latin America without using it. You can't order a pizza without Whatsapp. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Yeah it's everywhere. Basically every small-time hustle uses Whatsapp.

They haven't enabled the exporter yet; it's in the betas. But it will get enabled before they turn off SMS support.

It's going to be really annoying to go between all of my messaging platforms because everyone needs their own closed ecosystem. AT&T doesn't even support RCS on my phone unless it's through the official Samsung messaging app.
